As another summer comes to a close, the time has come to say goodbye to our interns. This summer, we had three three highly skilled interns who jumped into challenging projects, working closely with EXP team members. They took initiative, eagerly embracing learning opportunities and created products they should truly be proud of. Read below to see what our interns had to say about their experience at Expedition Technology this summer.

This summer didn’t feel like the kind of internship where you’re just handed a to-do list. For my intern project, I actually got to pick the technologies I wanted to work with, and those choices shaped the direction of the whole project. Having that freedom pushed me to think bigger than just getting code to run; I had to consider how everything would fit together and last beyond the summer. What made this summer even better was the environment. Everyone was always open and willing to help, and it was the kind of place where I could send a quick message and end up grabbing lunch with the CEO. That kind of accessibility made me feel like I belonged, not just as “the intern” but as part of the team. The mix of independence and support turned the experience into something I’ll genuinely carry forward.

When I think internships, I used to think about all the things that senior devs don’t want to do, especially updating outdated legacy code. This summer has been the complete opposite, and I’m so grateful for all the cool opportunities I’ve gotten at EXP! I was a part of the TDS team and got to work on some exploratory questions about expanding our product to future use cases. I gained hands-on experience in front-end development and explored the feasibility of integrating MLLMs into TDS. It was so cool to take charge of my project and choose the direction I wanted it to go to. I genuinely felt like a valued member of the team and was able to share my ideas in meetings, contribute suggestions, and even pick up a few smaller tickets along the way. At every step, I received thoughtful feedback from teammates and others across the company. I never imagined I’d be casually chatting with the CTO about my project, but there I was, doing just that! Anytime I had a question, needed clarification, or just wanted lunch recommendations, everyone was more than happy to help.

This summer, I worked on training robust computer vision models. For me, it was a great opportunity to work on an interesting research project that was built with some real infrastructure – which taught me a lot about more formal software engineering practices. It was awesome being looped in on the various efforts of the team and feeling like my work was something the team actually cared about. Outside of the actual work, everyone I met in the office was super friendly; two of our coworkers even took us to a local climbing gym! Some other highlights were winning soccer tickets in a company-wide raffle to a DC United game and the intern outing where we went on a Georgetown food tour; the other interns and I had a blast!
Now, it is time to start the challenge of finding candidates for the 2026 internship program.
